What
Wikipedia defines a micro-ISV as “an independent software vendor with just one software developer. In such an environment the company owner develops software, manages sales and does public relations.” The microISV Research Alliance is the public face of Auburn University’s Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering microISV Research Lab. Our mission is to assist microISV operators in building and growing their businesses by providing insight and research into topics and issues specific to the microISV community.

Who
The microISV Research Alliance was founded by Russell Thackston and Dr. David Umphress. Russell Thackston is a veteran IT consultant currently working on a PhD at Auburn University’s Department of  Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSSE). David Umphress is a software engineering consultant currently working as an Associate Professor in the CSSE department at Auburn University.

Why
MicroISVs are one of the most rapidly growing segments of the software engineering industry. We believe they are playing a critical role in the evolution and future of software. Formal, academic research into the methods and practices of microISV operators will help build a strong, well-tested knowledge base which current and future microISV founders can draw upon to grow their businesses.
